Sailing World has opted to send this Gulf Coast guy to Stockholm to cover what was once called the Round Gotland regatta. Racing 350nm from Stockholm through the archipelagos of Sweden to the open waters of the Baltic Sea, around Gotland Island before finishing in Sandhamn, nearly 300 boats will be on the starting line in two weeks. Having raced twice across the Gulf of Mexico in the Regata al Sol which stretches 555nm and up the coast of South America, this shouldn’t be too taxing and my biggest concern is whether I can wear flip-flops into the Royal Swedish Yacht Club. Here’s a nice promo video on the race.
I received confirmation that I will be embedded on the Maxi Yacht, Esimit Europa, for the race. Here’s a great video of my ride.
I’ll be traveling with acclaimed sailing photographer, Daniel Forster, and will be blogging daily for sailingworld.com as well as writing a feature for publication later this year in the magazine. I’ll have the links up for that once I know them. In the meantime, I’ll be off on the Gulf Islands for a BoatU.S. feature in a week along with a documentary film crew shooting a short PBS film.
